Description

Sustainable urban development in the South Caucasus Services: Dialogue, Dialogue Forums, Conferences The world is inexorably becoming urban. In 2008, according to the United Nations, more than half of the world’s population will be living in urban areas. By 2030 this number will grow to almost 5 billion. Globally, one person in five has no access to safe drinking water and scarce water resources are not anymore a sole problem of the global South. Solid waste management will be a key challenge facing all the world's cities. Cities in the South Caucasus face similar problems of urbanisation and the need to improve infrastructure and services to the public. Against this background, adelphi supported the KfW Development Bank with the organisation of a conference on “Sustainable Urban Development in South Caucasus” in Batumi/Georgia from April 3-4, 2012. The event was financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and brought together up to 100 representatives of governments, municipalities and water utilities from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia as well as local and international experts, and donors. Participants examined different challenges, concepts, multi-sectoral approaches, and possible solutions for sustainable urban development in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. The focus was set on water supply, sanitation and solid waste management. adelphi supported the KfW in the conceptualisation and logistical organisation of the conference and assists its implementation e.g. by providing an experienced and professional moderator.
